Alpine is one of those Frederick neighborhoods that doesn’t get a ton of attention from outside the city, but the people who live there tend to really like it. The homes have good bones. The lots are a decent size. And because it’s been around for a while, you get that settled-in feeling you don’t get in newer developments where every house looks the same and the trees are still six feet tall.
The flip side of an established neighborhood is that a lot of the interiors are carrying a few decades of decisions with them. Maybe the layout was updated at some point but the finishes weren’t. Maybe the previous owners had very strong opinions about wallpaper. Maybe you’ve just lived there long enough that the whole place has started to feel like it belongs to a version of you from ten years ago.
Zoltan Design Co is an interior designer based in Frederick, MD. We work with Alpine residents and homeowners throughout the city and county who want their spaces to feel intentional — not like they just accumulated furniture until the rooms filled up. Here’s what working with us looks like.

There are a few situations that come up over and over again with clients from Alpine and similar Frederick neighborhoods.
The most common one: they’ve been in the house for years and it’s time for a real update. Not a quick paint job or some new throw pillows — an actual rethink of how the space is working. Usually there’s a specific room that’s the tipping point. The living room that’s never been comfortable. The kitchen eating area that got ignored when they redid the kitchen. The main bedroom that’s basically just a place to put the bed.
Another one: someone bought the house and inherited its entire design history. They’ve been meaning to change things since they moved in. A few years later they’re still living with the previous owner’s color choices and a dining room set that doesn’t fit the space.
And then there’s the life-change scenario. Kids moved out and now there are rooms available for something other than storage. Someone started working from home and realized their house was never designed for that. A couple finally has the budget to do the renovation they’ve been talking about since they moved in.
All of these are good starting points. We’re not looking for clients who have everything figured out. We’re looking for clients who know something isn’t working and are ready to do something about it.
Most rooms in older Frederick homes weren’t designed around how people actually live today. We look at how the space flows, where natural light comes from, and how furniture placement either opens things up or closes them down. We build detailed floor plans before anything gets moved so you can see how it’ll work — not just guess.
Paint is the fastest way to change how a room feels, but it’s also the easiest thing to get wrong. Color looks totally different on a 2-inch chip than it does covering four walls. We test samples in your actual space, in your actual light, and help you build a palette that connects room to room instead of making your house feel like five different places.
You could hire someone from DC or Baltimore. Some people do. But working with a designer who’s actually based in Frederick means they know the contractors here, know the vendors who deliver to this area without a three-week lead time on scheduling, and aren’t treating your project like a day trip.
It also means we know the housing stock. Frederick has a mix of older homes, newer builds, and everything in between — and they all have different quirks. The ceiling heights are different. The layouts reflect different eras. The light comes in differently depending on which way the house faces and how the trees have grown. We’ve worked in enough of them to know what to look for.
We’re also a small studio. Zoltan is on your project from the first consultation to the final install. You’re not pitching your project to a principal and then getting handed off to a junior associate you’ve never met.
We serve clients throughout Frederick and the surrounding county. We work throughout Frederick County and into parts of Washington and Montgomery counties.
That’s most of what we do. Older homes have character that newer builds don’t, but they also have layouts that weren’t designed with today’s lifestyle in mind and original details that can be worked with or worked around depending on what you’re going for. We’d rather work in a house with history than a blank-slate new build most days.
That’s totally fine. We take single-room projects regularly. A lot of clients start with one room, see how the process works, and come back for others. Some clients just need one room done and that’s it. Either way works.
Single-room projects typically run two to four months. Whole-home projects are longer — six months to a year is normal once you factor in furniture lead times. We build those lead times into the plan from the start so you’re not caught off guard.
